According to WCIA Online, a new bill in Illinois has been proposed to force mothers to name the new child’s father on the birth certificate or they won’t receive any state assistance, like child care or housing. If the assistance is denied the mother would be ineligible for financial aid from the state of Illinois to support their newborn. This does not sit well with not only moms who already receive financial assistance, but women who are expecting a new bundle of joy that won’t be helped by the father of the child. If no father is listed on the certificate the state will not issue one and the child growing up someday won’t have access to it for not only financial aid, if needed, but for getting a license or job. There has only been one exception to the proposal, which is the new mom can go to court to have a family member sign on the birth certificate to accept financial responsibility for the child. More than likely, though families are low-income already and not be able to pay lawyers to make this happen. The bill, also has made no exceptions for women who are rape or incest victims. If this bill is passed it would take effect immediately.
