With winter weather heading our way on Thursday (January 5th), The Illinois State Police, District 12, in Effingham would like to remind motorists to take the necessary precautions before getting behind the wheel in the snowy conditions.
According to a recent press release from Illinois State Police, District 12, a winter travel advisory will be in effect. The winter weather brings additional challenges and responsibilities and District 12 commander, Captain Cory Ristvedt asks that drivers be well prepared by allowing extra time to reach your destination, ensure passengers in the vehicle are securely restrained, drive defensively, and double check that your vehicle is properly maintained to handle the effects of cold temperatures.
If you would find yourself stranded, it is encouraged that you remain inside your vehicle and wait for first responders to arrive. If you are involved in an accident that does not require emergency assistance, you have up to 10 days to file a crash report at the nearest police station.
Also, State Police would like to remind motorists to yield to emergency and snow removal equipment. Keep in mind a new law that took effect January 1, 2017 will require motorists to slow down and move over for any disabled motorist exhibiting hazard lights.
A few other safety tips: Dress warmly, make sure someone is aware of your travel route, make sure you have your cell phone and charger, keep your gas tank at least two-thirds full, don’t crowd the plow, watch out for black ice, carry an emergency care kit (blankets, flashlights, batteries, gloves, ice scraper, jumper cables, etc.), and always wear a safety belt.
