A 35-year-old woman in New York went into labor Sunday afternoon while she was home alone with her two-year-old daughter. Her husband wasn’t there, so they had to take an Uber to the hospital. But it didn’t get there in time.
The Uber driver was a 23-year-old guy named Athanasios Tsakalos.
When they realized they wouldn’t make it to the hospital, he pulled over on the side of the highway and tried to help deliver the baby. But he had no idea what he was doing.
Luckily a cop named Raphael Mohammed was nearby. And before he was a cop, he was a paramedic.
So he took over and realized the baby was BREECH. Its arms, legs, and body were out, but its head wasn’t. And the umbilical cord was wrapped around its neck.
He managed to shift the baby and loosen the umbilical cord. Then he finished the delivery . . . untangled the cord . . . and got the kid breathing.
Another cop showed up right after that, and directed traffic so an ambulance could get to them. The woman and her new daughter are both doing fine.
