Southern Illinois Mine Going To The Bats
(Tamms, IL) — A former coal mine in southern Illinois is getting a new life as a bat cave. The Organization for Bat Conservation announced last week that it’s been given the right to use the old Magazine Mine in Tamms to give bats in the region a place to hibernate during the winter. OBC researchers also hope to study the bats, both to monitor their behavior and to keep an eye on the disease White Nose Syndrome, which is killing bats across the country.
