The federal government is shut down today despite a flurry of last-minute negotiations on the Senate floor. Some lawmakers are worried about leaving government workers in the lurch. South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said the government shutdown “is a loser proposition for both parties.” As the negotiations continued, government agencies were dusting off their shutdown playbooks and getting ready to close. Federal officials say essential personnel are expected to keep on working without a paycheck for now.
Today is the first anniversary of President Trump’s inauguration and it’s being remembered as the day the federal government shut down. The President postponed a trip to his Florida resort this weekend where he had planned a lavish party to mark his first year in office. Legislators remain in Washington this weekend hoping to get a deal done to fund the government.
