“Rolling Stone” has a list of ‘The 40 Greatest Emo Albums of All Time.’ It includes everything from the earlier, lesser known, influential emo groups from the ’80s and ’90s . . . to the mainstream pop punk bands of the 2000s.
The definition of emo is a little vague, but here’s their Top 10:
1. “Diary”, Sunny Day Real Estate, 1994
2. “Rites of Spring”, Rites of Spring, 1985
3. “Nothing Feels Good”, The Promise Ring, 1997
4. “Dear You”, Jawbreaker, 1995
5. “Frame and Canvas”, Braid, 1998
6. “American Football”, American Football, 1999
7. “Burritos, Inspiration Point, Folk Balloon Sports . . .”, Cap’n Jazz, 1995
8. “Bleed American”, Jimmy Eat World, 2001
9. “From Under the Cork Tree”, Fall Out Boy, 2005
10. “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge”, My Chemical Romance, 2004
If you don’t recognize Rites of Spring, they’re the group that STARTED emo.
According to “Rolling Stone”, the word ’emo’ was coined by fans of hardcore music as an INSULT, because their music and lyrics were weren’t aggressive and tough, it was more emotional and vulnerable.
