A couple from Israel named Danielle Eden and Rob Scheinberg opened a shelter in Toronto about two years ago, for dogs that are either disabled, or can’t get adopted because they’re old or abused.
It’s about 50 acres, so there’s plenty of room. And they’re constantly bringing in new rescues from other shelters . . . usually 10 or 20 at a time.
But last month they were visiting Israel, and found the worst shelter they’d ever seen. It was supposed to hold 70 dogs, but there were 265. So they were sharing cages . . . only had bread to eat . . . and there were rats everywhere, including a few dead ones.
So instead of just rescuing a few of the dogs . . . Danielle and Rob decided to buy the entire SHELTER.
Over the past few weeks, they’ve flown about 50 of the dogs back to Toronto, and relocated another 100 to other shelters in Israel that had more room.
So about a hundred are still there. But they’re on a healthy diet now, and the whole place has been cleaned up. And a bunch of the dogs they flew back to Canada have already been adopted.
