Person Shown In Oscar’s In Memoriam Segment Very Much Alive
(Hollywood, CA) — There was more than one snafu at this year’s Academy Awards. An Australian producer whose photo was shown during the In-Memoriam segment is still very much alive. Jan Chapman tells “Variety” she was devastated to see her picture show up during the tribute to those in the movie-making field who have passed away in the past year. Four-time Oscar nominee and Australian costume designer Janet Patterson passed away in 2015 and was noted during the segment, but the producers goofed up on the photo and used one of the still-alive Chapman. Chapman says she and Patterson were friends and she had actually urged Patterson’s agency to make sure the photo was correct, only to be told that the Academy had it covered. Chapman says she wants the world to know she is “alive and well and an active producer.”
The mistake came on the same night when actress Faye Dunaway read the wrong winner for Best Picture. Dunaway and Warren Beatty announced that “La La Land” had claimed the top prize, only to reveal moments later that they had the wrong card and that “Moonlight” was the actual Best Picture winner.
