According to the Illinois State Police, a tractor trailer driven by Wayne Kauffman, of Oakland, Maryland was eastbound on I-70 east of Martinsville when he failed to stop for backed up traffic at a construction zone. Kauffman struck a van driven by Raymond Johnson, of Orange, Connecticut, causing the chain reaction pile-up. Johnson died at the scene. Three others involved in the accident were taken to the hospital. Kauffman was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, aggravated reckless driving, and using an electronic communication device while driving. I-70 eastbound was closed for nearly 9hours and rerouted onto U.S. 40 at the Martinsville exit. This crash is being investigated by Illinois State Police District 12, Zone 7, and Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.
