According to the National Weather Service, very cold conditions are expected across the area tomorrow through Tuesday. This special weather statement includes: Coles, Moultrie, Douglas, Clark, Effingham, Cumberland, Edgar, Jasper, Crawford, Richland, and Lawrence Counties.
Bitterly cold air will plunge into the Midwest this weekend, and linger through Tuesday morning. Waves of very cold air will combine with steady northwest winds to produce dangerously cold wind chills periodically, especially at night. Wind chills south of I-70 could drop to around 15 below zero. A reminder: frost bite can occur in less than 30 minutes under those conditions.
Plan to reduce time spent outdoors from tomorrow to Tuesday. Cover as much exposed skin as possible when outside and wear multiple layers to protect from the cold. Also, plan to check on the elderly and be aware of the safety of pets that spend time outdoors.
