UPDATED: Scott Lays Out Plan To Keep Schools Safe
(Tallahassee, FL) — Florida Governor Rick Scott is outlining his plan to keep schools safe. While speaking in Tallahassee today, Scott proposed a three point plan that focuses on gun laws, school safety and mental health. He said he wants to increase the minimum age to buy guns in the state to 21 and ban the sale of bump stocks. There would be exceptions for law enforcement, active duty and reserve military. Scott said he wants to impose stricter laws that prevent violent or mentally ill people from getting their hands on a firearm. His plan also includes an allocation of 450 million dollars to bolster school safety. Scott wants to make sure a law enforcement officer is in every public school all hours students are on campus. The funds will be used for mandatory active shooter training as well as school hardening measures like metal detectors, steel doors and upgraded locks. He also said 50 million dollars will be used for mental health initiatives statewide. His proposal comes after 17 people were killed at a high school in Parkland, Florida last week.

Scott Announces Gun Initiative Following Parkland Shooting
(Tallahassee, FL) — Florida Governor Rick Scott is pushing for major changes to the state’s gun laws in the wake of last week’s deadly mass shooting at a South Florida high school. Today, the governor proposed several changes to Florida’s gun laws, including restricting all firearms sales to people aged 21 and older. The changes would also give the courts the power to prevent people who are mentally ill and potentially dangerous from buying guns. Family members, law enforcement officers or social welfare leaders would have to prove to the court that the person was potentially dangerous. Scott called the proposed changes “common sense” solutions to prevent further mass shootings.
