New in Theaters: “Pacific Rim 2” and “Sherlock Gnomes”
1. “Pacific Rim Uprising“ (PG-13)
John Boyega plays the son of Idris Elba’s character, the Jaeger pilot who sacrificed himself to help seal the breach that the aliens were coming through in the first movie.
He and Scott Eastwood help lead a new generation of pilots to fight the Kaiju after someone from our world opens a new breach that the aliens can get through again.
2. “Sherlock Gnomes“ (PG)
James McAvoy and Emily Blunt return as Gnomeo and Juliet and they call on the legendary detective to investigate the disappearance of some missing gnomes. Johnny Depp plays Sherlock Gnomes and Chiwetel Ejiofor is Dr. Watson.
The rest of the cast includes Ozzy Osbourne, Mary J. Blige, and Michael Caine.
3. “Midnight Sun“ (PG-13)
Bella Thorne plays a teenager with a severe sensitivity to sunlight, who risks her life for romance when she falls for Patrick Schwarzenegger after he hears her singing one night. You’ve probably heard her single from the movie, “Burn So Bright“.
Rob Riggle plays her overprotective dad.
4. “Unsane“ (R)
Claire Foy is involuntarily committed to a mental institution while trying to escape from a stalker, then becomes convinced that he’s followed her and taken a job on the staff. But is any of it real, or just a side effect of the drugs they’re forcing her to take?
Juno Temple plays her unhinged roommate. You know Claire from “The Crown“.
5. “Paul, Apostle of Christ“ (PG-13)
James Faulkner from “Downton Abbey“ is Saint Paul, a Roman who originally persecuted Christians until he was struck blind by Jesus after his resurrection. Paul then converted to Christianity and become one of his greatest disciples.
Most of the Acts of the Apostles is about him. The movie covers the end of Paul’s life, as he’s telling his story to gospel author Luke, who also wrote the Book of Acts.
Jim Cavaziel plays Luke. He risks his life to visit Paul in prison to get his story before he’s executed by the Romans. You know Jim from “Person of Interest” and as Jesus in “The Passion of the Christ”.
