According to a Recent Press Release from Illinois State Police District 10:
Preliminary details indicate that Illinois State Police responded to two separate traffic crashes with serious injuries on I-57 northbound near milepost 218 at approximately 1:56 pm. The first traffic crash involved five vehicles. The second crash occurred south of the first crash and involved three vehicles. The northbound lanes were closed for approximately 4 ½ hours. The southbound lanes were also closed, but for only two hours. Both crashes are still under investigation. More information regarding the specifics of the crashes will be released at a later time.
