New fissures are spraying magma from Hawaii’s Kilauea [[ KILL-uh-WAY-uh ]] volcano and authorities warns that more is likely on the way. Two more fissures have opened over the weekend, making it 17 since the volcano erupted on the Big Island more than a week ago. Thousands have evacuated as dozens of homes and structures have been destroyed. The area remains seismically active and geologists warn of possible explosive eruptions. Governor David Ige [[ EE-gay ]] says President Trump granted his request to declare the state a major disaster area. The declaration paves the way for federal assistance to repair public facilities damaged or destroyed by the eruption and earthquakes.
