Suicide Hotline Calls Double
(Undated) — Twice as many Americans are calling suicide hotlines as the suicide rate climbs. Calls to the National suicidePrevention Lifeline doubled form 2014 to 2017. The lifeline answered more than two-million calls last year, up from a million just three years earlier. More than one and-a-half million calls came in during 2015 and again in 2016. Lifeline officials say the recent high-profile suicides of celebrities Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain have raised public attention and led to more calls. The latest figures from the CDC, released last month, show the suicide rate in the U.S. increased more than 25-percent from 1999 to 2016.
