Report: Pregnant Women Should Be Screened For Depression
(Washington, DC) — A national task force says doctors should screen pregnant women and new mothers to identify those who are at risk for depression. The new draft recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force say a diagnosis of depression can be avoided if new mothers and pregnant woman get treatment before showing symptoms. The recommendations say doctors should look for risk factors like a history of depression and current symptoms like hopelessness and a lack of sleep. Doctors should also look for socioeconomic risk factors like being a single parent, very young, or having a low income.
About one-in-seven pregnant women and new mothers will suffer from depression during pregnancy or after childbirth.
