“Night School” was #1 at the box office this weekend, earning $28 million. That isn’t a super-exciting total in the age of blockbuster superhero movies, but it’s good enough to give KEVIN HART the best debut for a “pure comedy” so far this year.
That’s a LITTLE tenuous though, because it doesn’t include comedic superhero movies like “Deadpool 2” ($125 million) or “Ant-Man and the Wasp” ($75 million), and it doesn’t include “Ocean’s 8” ($41 million).
In fact, “Crazy Rich Asians” ($26 million) isn’t even considered a ‘pure comedy,’ but “Night School” had it beat anyway. The previous best was “Blockers”, which debuted with $20.6 million. Here’s this weekend’s Top 10 . . .

6. NEW: “Hell Fest”, $5.1 million.
7. “Crazy Rich Asians”, $4.2 million. Up to $165.7 million in its 7th week.
8. “The Predator”, $3.7 million. Up to $47.6 million in its 3rd week.
9. “White Boy Rick”, $2.4 million. Up to $21.7 million in its 3rd week.
10. “Peppermint”, $1.8 million. Up to $33.5 million in its 4th week.
