There’s a 10-year-old kid in Georgia named Tyler Boone who’s been friends with a 12-year-old girl near Tampa named Gabby Ruiz since they were really young.
She suffers from alopecia areata . . . the autoimmune disease that attacks your hair follicles, so you lose all your hair. And she usually wears a head cover.
About two years ago, Tyler asked why she never took it off, and his mom explained the whole thing to him.
Then he said wanted to do something to help her. So for the last two years he’s been growing his hair out to make a WIG.
His hair finally got long enough for him to get it cut last Wednesday. It was a little bit past his shoulders, so more than a foot long.
He says he was pretty sick of people thinking he was a girl all the time. So he likes his new haircut, but he’s still glad he did it.
Gabby should get her wig in about six weeks. Her mom says she’s always been fairly comfortable with herself. But she’s getting to the age where she cares about boys and stuff, so she’s pretty excited. (WFTS / ABC News)
