We’ve heard rumors about this for a while, but now it’s official: Crystal Pepsi is coming back. It was around for about a year in the early ’90s, but didn’t sell well and they stopped making it.
Then Pepsi had a contest last year, where 13,000 people won six-packs of it. But now, starting August 8th, you’ll be able to buy 20-ounce bottles of it. Or July 11th if you’re willing to drive to Canada to get some. Don’t laugh . . . people WILL do that.
It sounds like the bigwigs at Pepsi know we’ll get sick of it again though, because they’re only selling it for two months. But they could extend that if it sells well, and the nostalgia factor is pretty high right now . . .
They’re promoting it by trying to make us all even MORE nostalgic for the ’90s. They’re releasing an online game next Thursday that’s basically “Oregon Trail”, but you drive across the country and collect as much ’90s memorabilia as you can.
It’s not clear if he had anything to do with it or not, but a YouTuber who goes by the name L.A. Beast started a campaign last year to bring back Crystal Pepsi. They sent him a letter last June that said, “stay tuned.”
They also announced this week that they’re bringing back their old version of Diet Pepsi, made with aspartame instead of Splenda. They’re calling it “Diet Pepsi Classic,” and it’ll hit stores this September. (PepsiCo.com / AdAge)
